IKV TRIBOLOGY LTD were sorry to hear about the death of PROFESSOR Peter Jost, who has died aged 95. He coined the term “tribology” (from the Greek word “tribo” – I rub) to describe the science of friction, wear, and lubrication – giving birth to a new engineering discipline – after which our company was named!
In 1966 he published a report which showed for the first time, that the problems of lubrication in engineering were mainly problems of design. Their solutions, Jost argued, needed a range of skills from scientific disciplines other than mechanical engineering – including chemistry and materials science, solid body mechanics and physics.
By applying tribology to machine design, Jost and his team calculated that British industry could save £500 million a year (1960’s calculation) as a result of fewer breakdowns causing lost production, lower energy consumption, reduced maintenance costs and longer machine life.
As recently as 2015 a press release from five learned societies announcing the creation of a UK Tribology Network to promote best practice observed that while Britain has a strong academic and industrial tribology base – “due to the fragmentation of activity within the UK the impact on reducing the very high cost (circa 1.4 per cent of GDP) of uncontrolled friction, lubrication, surface selection and wear-control within industry has been limited.”
Jost served as a director and chairman of several technology and engineering companies including the solid lubricants company K S Paul, and Engineering & General Equipment. He also served on numerous industry councils, and until his death was president of the International Tribology Council and a life member of the council of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee.
He was an honorary fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and of the Institute of Materials. Appointed CBE in 1969, Jost was honoured by the heads of state of France, Germany, Poland, Austria and Japan and in 1992 became the first honorary foreign member of the Russia Academy of Engineering. He held two honorary professorships and 11 honorary doctorates including, in January 2000, the first Millennium honorary science doctorate.
In 2009 he co-launched the concept of Green Tribology, paving the way for the first Green Tribology World Congress.
He is survived by his wife Margaret Kadesh, two daughters and three grandchildren.
IKV TRIBOLOGY support the recommendations laid down by ISO / DIS 14159 advising use of only food grade lubricants in all applications on a food production site to avoid confusion or accidental contamination from non-food grade lubricants in the food processing environment.
The food processing lubricant range offered by IKV TRIBOLOGY satisfy the domestic regulations for this sector.
IKV TRIBOLOGY offer a wide range of products which are resistant to extreme high temperatures, high loads, water ingress and all other challenges faced by the food processing and pharmaceutical industries.
We have recently added new products to our food safe range including food safe lubricant aerosols which offer a convenient and neat package of the ‘product’ and ‘means of application’ in a simple to use and efficient package.
Lubricants such as oils and greases are combined with a solvent/carrier solution and a propellant in a formulation that allows the material to atomise and be applied in a thin layer. Once applied the carrier will evaporate allowing the grease or oil to be left behind to lubricate the components.

IKV are pleased to announce the launch of their new WRAS Approved grease, IKV TRIBOSTAR SSI 1203 TF. It is based upon a high performance silicone oil incorporating an inorganic thickener to form a white/translucent grease/gel.
IKV TRIBOSTAR SSI 1203 TF possesses an excellent resistance to extreme temperatures, an exceptional resistance to water and steam as well as various chemical agents (acetone, glycol, glycerine, ethyl and methyl alcohol).
It has been approved by the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS Approval Number: 1509564) according to British Standard BS 6920 for lubricants suitable for potable water installations. It is tasteless, odourless and non-toxic and remains essentially unaltered at temperatures between -40ºC to +200ºC.
It is also registered by NSF International / Nonfood Compounds Registration Program under Category H-1, NSF Registration No. 151908. The product is acceptable for use as a lubricant in contact with potable water to be used within food processing plants.

What is the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning?
The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. They ask people all over the UK to host their own Coffee Mornings and donations on the day are made to Macmillan. Last year alone they raised £25 million and this year are aiming to raise even more. Join us for tea, coffee and cake at our office – see flyer for full details.
IKV are pleased to announce the launch of their new maintenance sprays – TRIBOFOOD PTFE Dry Film Spray, TRIBOGEAR Open Gear Spray & COPPER ANTI-SEIZE spray.
Our IKV COPPER ANTI SEIZE Spray is a non-melting lubricant for the prevention of seizure and is effective up to 1200°C. It is extremely temperature resistant, protects screw threads, linkages, pivots and mating surfaces. It is ideal for high loads, reduces fretting corrosion and resists wash off. It can be used on bearings, pivots, slides and articulations in the presence of water, chemical & galvanic corrosion. It prevents the ingress of water and corrosive solutions.
In a globally competitive market corrugating manufacturers have to ensure maximum performance from their machinery. This means that machinery needs to last longer, require less maintenance and produce quality, end products.
IKV Group manufacture high performance lubricants formulated specifically for the needs of the corrugating industry & have launched a new corrugator grease range.
CORRUGATOR ROLL SUPPORT BEARING LUBRICATION
IKV-TRIBOFLON MYA FG Corrugator Greases offer:-
All materials used in the formulations of IKV-TRIBOFLON appear in the positive list 21 CFR of the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA). This permits certification to NSF Class H-1 according to National Sanitary Foundation requirements for Food Grade Lubricants making the product ideal for the production of food grade packaging.

Hygiene and environmental regulations require lubricants to be effective yet biologically inert when used in hospital wards, operating theatres and hospital laboratories.
IKV Group manufacture a number of special greases and oils to be used in both medical and dental applications including a full range of fluorinated products.
Our full range of perfluoropolyether (PFPE) sprays and aerosols are chemically inert, oxygen compatible, non-flammable, non-migrating and most importantly are biologically inert and crucially do not support biological growth.
The IKV fluorinated aerosol range includes IKV-FLUOR 32 C SPRAY, IKV-FLUOR 70 SPRAY, IKV-FLUOR 141 SPRAY, IKV-FLUOR MPA 2H SPRAY and IKV-FLUOR 32 SPRAY.
Our ZAROX MEDI-LUBE is a non-flammable, colourless and odourless perfluoropolyether (PFPE) fluid formulated into aerosol form for ease of application which is extensively used as an ‘anti-squeak’ coating on medical cubicle curtains.
The product was developed for use as a lubricating anti-friction coating on a wide range of substrates including plastics, elastomers and leather. The product is totally compatible with all commonly used elastomers, seals, gaskets, plastics and metals, providing a durable, low friction film and eliminating unwanted noise and friction. This totally colourless lubricant leaves a long lasting lubricating film, which does not stain the substrate.
ZAROX MEDI-LUBE is suited to all types of industry where a high technology lubricant or coating is required.
ZAROX MEDI-LUBE is chemically inert and can be used in the presence of liquid and gaseous oxygen and other reactive chemicals.
Temperature range: -40 to 200°C.
Pack size: 100ml with extension nozzle.
Please also speak to us about PFPE oils which can also be used in these applications. For advice on the best product for you application or for a free consultation, please contact us.
