IKV TRIBOLOGY LTD were sorry to hear about the death of PROFESSOR Peter Jost, who has died aged 95. He coined the term “tribology” (from the Greek word “tribo” – I rub) to describe the science of friction, wear, and lubrication – giving birth to a new engineering discipline – after which our company was named!
In 1966 he published a report which showed for the first time, that the problems of lubrication in engineering were mainly problems of design. Their solutions, Jost argued, needed a range of skills from scientific disciplines other than mechanical engineering – including chemistry and materials science, solid body mechanics and physics.
By applying tribology to machine design, Jost and his team calculated that British industry could save £500 million a year (1960’s calculation) as a result of fewer breakdowns causing lost production, lower energy consumption, reduced maintenance costs and longer machine life.
As recently as 2015 a press release from five learned societies announcing the creation of a UK Tribology Network to promote best practice observed that while Britain has a strong academic and industrial tribology base – “due to the fragmentation of activity within the UK the impact on reducing the very high cost (circa 1.4 per cent of GDP) of uncontrolled friction, lubrication, surface selection and wear-control within industry has been limited.”
Jost served as a director and chairman of several technology and engineering companies including the solid lubricants company K S Paul, and Engineering & General Equipment. He also served on numerous industry councils, and until his death was president of the International Tribology Council and a life member of the council of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee.
He was an honorary fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and of the Institute of Materials. Appointed CBE in 1969, Jost was honoured by the heads of state of France, Germany, Poland, Austria and Japan and in 1992 became the first honorary foreign member of the Russia Academy of Engineering. He held two honorary professorships and 11 honorary doctorates including, in January 2000, the first Millennium honorary science doctorate.
In 2009 he co-launched the concept of Green Tribology, paving the way for the first Green Tribology World Congress.
He is survived by his wife Margaret Kadesh, two daughters and three grandchildren.
IKV TRIBOLOGY support the recommendations laid down by ISO / DIS 14159 advising use of only food grade lubricants in all applications on a food production site to avoid confusion or accidental contamination from non-food grade lubricants in the food processing environment.
The food processing lubricant range offered by IKV TRIBOLOGY satisfy the domestic regulations for this sector.
IKV TRIBOLOGY offer a wide range of products which are resistant to extreme high temperatures, high loads, water ingress and all other challenges faced by the food processing and pharmaceutical industries.
We have recently added new products to our food safe range including food safe lubricant aerosols which offer a convenient and neat package of the ‘product’ and ‘means of application’ in a simple to use and efficient package.
Lubricants such as oils and greases are combined with a solvent/carrier solution and a propellant in a formulation that allows the material to atomise and be applied in a thin layer. Once applied the carrier will evaporate allowing the grease or oil to be left behind to lubricate the components.

We manufacture a complete range of fluids, gels & dry film lubricants to aid component assembly and decrease assembly effort & process time and they are compatible with most materials used.
Production Line Maintenance
Synthetic lubricants which can be used to extend component life, reduce downtime and unscheduled maintenance in:-
Our IKV MULTI-LUBE TF is a high technology special lubricating dispersion of PTFE added to a blend of synthetic base oils and a carrier fluid to aid penetration. It offers exceptional performance in specialised areas such as curtain sided truck runners, roller door guides to make side curtains slide freely, eliminates friction and dries tack-free so dust and dirt do not accumulate.
It also serves to reduce the force required by operators to open & close the curtains thereby helping to eliminate the potential for RSI (repetitive strain injury) where repeated operations are necessary.
IKV MULTI-LUBE TF also has high load carrying capacity & exceptional resistance to arduous conditions, weathering and contamination. IKV MULTI-LUBE TF contains a solvent carrier which ensures that it penetrates into the working area and inaccessible areas so is in effect a combined penetrant & lubricant. It also serves to break down corroded material and other deposits. The PTFE then forms a lubricating film that repels water, dust and other contaminants.
What is PTFE?
PTFE is a fluorocarbon solid which has one of the lowest coefficients of friction of any solid. Where used as a lubricant, PTFE reduces friction, wear and energy consumption of machinery. The PTFE dry film lubricant resists temperatures in excess of 250°C. It also has excellent inertness and significantly reduces the friction co-efficient between mating surfaces.
IKV MULTI-LUBE TF can be applied by brush, pump spray or back pack sprayer with lance for larger applications & hard to reach areas. The material should be agitated by shaking or stirring before use.
IKV MULTI-LUBE TF is equally effective for:-
It is non-toxic, non-corrosive and non-staining & can be utilised in any areas where a light lubricant or penetrant is required and following the introduction of VOSA (Vehicle Operator & Services Agency) and HSE (Health & Safety Executive) guidelines in 2012 addressing their concerns that a significant number of vehicles containing loads were not sufficiently restrained, VOSA drafted a matrix distinguishing between various types of loads and has three categories of severity for assessing load securing.
The securing of loads is assessed against a matrix and may result in prohibition action where a high risk failure to secure adequately is identified. These regulations indicate that loads must be secured if necessary by physical restraint other than their own weight in order to protect drivers, other road users and to prevent damage to loads.
As a result various restraint systems are now available and these new restraining and containment systems require lubrication for effective operation. We also have a range of PTFE based aerosols which can be used for convenient application in a simple to use and efficient package.
